The visit programme of the project “Gurkha Elder Resilience Project for North West London” by Gurkha Nepalese Welfare Society UK (GNWS-UK) was held on 6th August 2025. The educational visit of the participants to the “Hitchin Lavender, Caldwell farm. Lckleford, SG5 3UA. One coach was hired for the visit and the coach hire fund covered by Gurkha Nepalese Welfare Society UK. The visit was facilitated by Trustee Member/ Senior Vice Chairperson Mrs. Bishnu Kumari Gurung and General Secretary Mrs Bimla Kumari Rai. During the visit snacks were provided to the participants.

The Practical English language sessions-Nine of the project “Gurkha Elder Resilience Project for North West London ‘’ by Gurkha Nepalese Welfare Society UK (GNWS-UK) and funded by National Lottery, Community Fund was held on 19th June 2024 at South Harrow Sports and Social Club. Expand vocabulary related to everyday activities and needs.Objective: Understand the language and etiquette of using public transportation and navigating public spaces.Topics: 

  1. Food and shopping (e.g., names of common foods, how to ask for items)
  2. Transportation (e.g., asking for directions, types of transportation)
  3. Health (e.g., parts of the body, symptoms, making doctor’s appointments) The programme was facilitated by Ms Amrita Thapa.

Week 12- The Second Dance and Cultural Session

Date: 9th June 2024.

The second Dance and Cultural Session of the “Gurkha Elder Resilience Project for North West London” by the Gurkha Nepalese Welfare Society UK (GNWS-UK), funded by the National Lottery Community Fund, took place on 9th June 2024 at Northolt Village Community Centre, Northolt. Interactive Dance Workshop. The dance instructor, well-versed in traditional Gurkha dances, led a fun and interactive workshop. This session was designed to accommodate all ability levels, ensuring that everyone could participate. The programme was facilitated by Mrs. Manikala Rai Gurung.

The Practical English language sessions-Eight of the project “Gurkha Elder Resilience Project for North West London ‘’ by Gurkha Nepalese Welfare Society UK (GNWS-UK) and funded by National Lottery, Community Fund was held on 5th June 2024 at South Harrow Sports and Social Club. Navigating Public Spaces and Transportation. 

Objective: Understand the language and etiquette of using public transportation and navigating public spaces.

Topics:

1. Reading public transport schedules (e.g., buses, trains)

2. Buying tickets and asking about fares.

3. Road safety and pedestrian rules.The programme was facilitated by Ms Amrita Thapa.

Week 8- Introduction to Basic Computing and Internet- Session two.

Date: 19 May 2024.

The IT awareness workshops two of the project “Gurkha Elder Resilience Project for North West London” by Gurkha Nepalese Welfare Society UK (GNWS-UK) and funded by National Lottery, Community Fund was held on 19th May 2024 at South Harrow Sports and Social Club. Introduction to Basic Computing and Internet.

Objective: Familiarise participants with basic computer operations and navigating the internet.

  • Session Topics:

    • Turning on and off a computer/laptop

    • Basic navigation in Windows or Mac OS (using a mouse, opening applications)

    • Introduction to the internet (using a browser, understanding URLs)-

Understanding British Culture.

Objective: Introduce elements of British culture that impact daily life. Topics:

  • British social etiquette (e.g., politeness, queuing, basic manners)

  • Festivals and holidays (e.g., Christmas, Bonfire Night, Remembrance Day) .British history and symbols (e.g., the Union Jack, the Royal Family)The programme was facilitated by Ms Amrita Thapa.

Week 4- Using Smartphones and Tablets.

  • The IT awareness workshops first session of the project “Gurkha Elder Resilience Project for North West London ‘’ by Gurkha Nepalese Welfare Society UK (GNWS-UK) and funded by National Lottery, Community Fund was held on 27th April 2024 at Royal British Legion, South Harrow. The main Objective of IT session is introducing the basics of using smartphones and tablets, focusing on Android and iOS platforms. Examples:

    • Turning on/off, adjusting volume, connecting to Wi-Fi

    • Navigating the home screen, using touch gestures

    • Downloading apps from the App Store (iOS) or Google Play Store (Android)

 The programme was facilitated by Mr. David Gurung and Mr. Sujan Gurung.

The first initiative focuses on daily English proficiency to enhance community integration. Dance and Cultural Session-One                                                 

 Date: 13 April 2024

The first Dance and Cultural Session of the “Gurkha Elder Resilience Project for North West London” by the Gurkha Nepalese Welfare Society UK (GNWS-UK), funded by the National Lottery Community Fund, took place on 13 April 2024 at Harrow Borough Football Club, South Harrow. The project was launched on the auspicious occasion of Nepali New Year 2081 by trustee members and English and Dance instructors. The dance instructor, well-versed in traditional Gurkha dances, led a fun and interactive workshop. This session was designed to accommodate all ability levels, ensuring that everyone could participate. The programme was facilitated by Mrs. Manikala Rai Gurung.
