GNWS UK <\/strong> Successfully Launches Veterans Foundation UK-Funded Adult Education Programme<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gurkha Nepalese Welfare Society UK (GNWS UK) is delighted to announce the successful launch of its Adult Education Programme, funded by Veterans\u2019 Foundation UK, for elderly Ex-British Gurkha Army veterans and their dependants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The programme was officially launched on 18 April 2026 at South Harrow Sports and Social Club, South Harrow, marking the beginning of a year-long initiative designed to promote lifelong learning, digital inclusion, health awareness, physical wellbeing and social engagement among elderly members of the Society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The launch event was attended by GNWS UK Trustees and Executive Committee members, including Mr Ganja Bahadur Ale (Chairman and Trustee), Mrs Bishnu Kumari Gurung (Senior Vice Chair and Trustee), Mr Rajendra Limbu (Vice Chair and Trustee), Mr Ganesh Ale (Treasurer and Trustee), Lieutenant Tham Prasad Gurung (Trustee, Adviser and Chief Coordinator of the Veterans Foundation UK-funded project), and Mrs Bimala Kumari Rai (General Secretary), together with participants and members of the Society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the opening ceremony, Lieutenant Tham Prasad Gurung, Chief Coordinator of the project, explained that the programme has been specifically developed for Ex-British Gurkha Army veterans and their dependants. He introduced the programme’s key activities, which will be delivered throughout the project period:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. The first initiative focuses on daily English proficiency to enhance community integration. The goal is to improve the conversational English skills; fostering stronger connections within the community.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. The project aims to mitigate loneliness and enhance societal integration through IT awareness workshops. The objective is to equip participants with essential IT skills; enabling them to navigate online banking; social media; and engage in effective email communication.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. For health and well-being; the project introduces mind games and dance activities. The objective is to foster physical; mental; and social benefits for participants.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. Lastly; the project includes educational and cultural exploration through visits to historically significant places. The aim is to provide a well-rounded experience; facilitating learning and enjoyment for senior Gurkha citizens.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Mr Gurung also announced that this year’s educational visit will be different from previous years. Participants will visit the Royal Hospital Chelsea, home of the famous Chelsea Pensioners<\/strong>, where they will gain first-hand knowledge of the history, welfare services and daily lives of retired British Army veterans. This visit aims to inspire participants while providing valuable insight into one of the United Kingdom’s most respected military institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Speaking at the event, Mr Ganja Bahadur Ale, Chairman of GNWS UK, expressed his sincere appreciation to Lieutenant Tham Prasad Gurung for his dedication, leadership and commitment in successfully securing and coordinating this important project. He also extended heartfelt thanks to Veterans Foundation UK for awarding the grant and recognising the needs of Ex-British Gurkha Army veterans and their families within the Nepalese community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Mr Ale stated that the project officially commenced on 18 April 2026 and will continue until May 2027. He expressed confidence that the programme will empower elderly members by improving their knowledge, digital skills, health awareness, confidence and overall wellbeing while encouraging greater social participation and lifelong learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The programme launch was skilfully hosted by Mrs Bimala Kumari Rai, General Secretary of GNWS UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
